London's Syrian Newcomers to Make Donation to Red Cross Fort McMurray Relief Fund

On Monday, June 6th, a group of Syrian newcomers will be at City Hall to present the Canadian Red Cross with a donation to the Fort McMurray Relief Fund.

The money was raised by the group, supported by the Cross Cultural Learners’ Centre, after members learned of the wildfires in Alberta.

Inspired by this act in other communities, like Ottawa, this group came together to show their new neighbours in Canada that they too are here to help.

“We followed with great sadness the fire disaster in Fort McMurray that swept through their community, destroying houses and displacing thousands of people,” says refugee Mohammad Kurdy. “We know what losing your house means. We know what it’s like to say goodbye to your life-time souvenirs and to start from scratch establishing a new life in a new place.”

To date, London has welcomed over 1,000 Syrian refugees to the City through both government and private sponsorships. The community raised over $400,000 to bring refugees from the war-torn country here. London is set to welcome another 900 people by the end of this year.
