Family Medicine Residents Attending Rural Medicine Retreat in Meaford

On Friday, June 17th, Grey Bruce Health Services (GBHS) will welcome 30 Family Medicine Residents from the University of Toronto to a Rural Medicine Retreat at the Meaford Hospital.

This event is being organized by GBHS and the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP). The day will include a question and answer period with the physicians, cardiac monitoring session, rural emergency birthing scenario, casting clinic, as well as some community based activities including a scarecrow building workshop, and a tour of the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre.

In addition, the Family Medicine Residents will also have a change to explore the area, meet with local community representatives and ask questions about local practice opportunities.

"This event provides residents with an excellent opportunity to connect with and learn from experts in the field - our rural physicians," said Lance Thurston, GBHS President and CEO. "Bringing these future docs into Grey and Bruce, also give us a change to highlight the rewarding aspects of living and practicing family medicine in our rural communities."

On average, the Medical Education Program at GBHS hosts 20 residents per month. These students are working to complete elective courses for McMaster, Western, Toronto, Queen's or Ottawa University. GBHS also has four full time Family Medicine Residents who are completing their two years of required training in the Grey Bruce region.
