City unveils preferred redesign of downtown Dundas Street

The City is transforming Dundas Street into "Dundas Place" - the most exciting street and unique destination in London. The city will reveal the preferred design concept on Wednesday and request public feedback.

The concept has had significant public consultation. Londoners have identified their favourite places to help the preferred design concept.

This is the first transformational project in Our Move Forward: London's Downtown Plan, approved by City Council in 2015. Under the plan the area from the Thames River to Wellington Street would be known as Dundas Place and be redesigned so it would better accommodate people and to have features so that the space can be used to host frequent events. To achieve this a flex street will be built - which reduces barriers with a unifying surface treatment, across the street from building face to building face, enabling the space between to be easily transformed for functions at different times of the day/week/year.

The first four blocks of Dundas Street are being designed to become a destination, starting at the Thames, where the Back To The River project is looking to revitalize a 5km stretch of the river. An economically healthy downtown contributes to London's economy as a whole. To help serve the area as a major destination, public transit buses would be routed to neighbouring streets, which has already been factored in London's planning for the Shift Rapid Transit Initiative.

Key infrastructure along and under Dundas needs replacement in the near future, including water pipes, sections of roadway and hydro lines. This provides an opportunity to reshape how the street is used by vehicles, pedestrians, and to enhance its ability to hose events and festivals. The estimated project cost to create Dundas Place is $16 million. Construction could begin as early as 2018.
