Don't Let Diabetes Derail Your Summer

St Joseph's experts have tips for a safe and healthy season

For people with diabetes, the summer months with travel, the great outdoors, gatherings, and more intense physical activity can be challenging. But with careful planning and preparation, the condition shouldn't stop you from doing anything you want to do, say experts at the Diabetes Education Centre of St Joseph Health Care London.

St Joseph's diabetes nurses, educators and dietitians have tips for all seasonal adventures - from taking to the road, sea or air, to indulging in the joys of summer eating, to embarking on a fitness quest. They have advice on crossing time zones, packing and storing your supplies, disposing of needles, and language challenges when traveling. They can tell you about metal detectors and pumps, amusement park rides and pumps, what to pack for camping and hiking trips, emergency kits, fasting during Ramadan, and much more.

"For people with diabetes, there's a lot to think about during the summer months," says dietitian Valerie Lammers. "You have to plan. You have to prepare."

No matter where you are or what you are doing, keeping blood glucose levels under control is critical, say St Joseph's experts. Their extensiv list of tips for summer is available on St Joseph's website at www.sjhc.london.on.ca/our-stories/safe-summer-tips-people-diabetes.
