Ontario Breaks Ground on Long-Term Care Home in London
New construction will bring 192 modern long-term care beds to the community
Construction is underway on Extendicare-London, a new 192-bed home in London, Ontario. This project was a recipient of the Construction Funding Subsidy top-up, part of the Ontario government’s commitment to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.
“Congratulations to the team on the new construction at Extendicare-London. Our government is fixing long-term care, and a key part of that plan is building capacity where Ontarians need it,” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care. “Today marks a significant milestone for London. When construction is complete, 192 residents will have a safe and modern place to call home.”
The new home will provide 22 new and 170 redeveloped beds and is expected to welcome its first residents in summer 2027. The design is centred around six ‘Resident Home Areas’, each of which creates a more intimate and familiar living space for up to 32 residents. Each RHA will have resident rooms, a dining area, activity space and a spa room. The building will also include large common areas for residents, a café, space for family dining, a chapel, a beauty salon/barber shop and private space for families supporting residents through end-of-life care, as well as air conditioning throughout the home.
The government is fixing long-term care to ensure Ontario’s seniors get the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve. The plan is built on four pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe, and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need. Quick Facts:
- The home will be operated by Extendicare (Canada) Inc.
- As of April 2025, 147 projects representing a total of 23,977 new and redeveloped beds are completed, under construction, or have ministry approval to construct.
- As part of its plan to fix long-term care and address sector waitlists, the government is building 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.
- Building more modern, safe and comfortable homes for our seniors is part of the Government of Ontario’s Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021.
- The province is taking innovative steps to get long-term care homes built, including modernizing its funding model, selling unused lands with the requirement that long-term care homes be built on portions of the properties, and leveraging hospital-owned land to build urgently needed homes in large urban areas.
