Ontario Helping More Families Access Fertility Supports
New tax credit and increased access will triple the number of families able to benefit from publicly funded fertility treatment
The Ontario government is helping more families access fertility treatments by expanding access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) services under the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP), with a call for applications open today to all Ontario fertility clinics. The applications are part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario by improving public services, investing $250 million over three years to increase the number of clinics participating in the OFP and shorten wait lists in both hospitals and community settings. The province is also implementing the new Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit, retroactive to January 1, 2025.
“As our government continues to protect Ontario families and the services they rely on, this historic announcement will triple the number of families benefitting from government-funded IVF services,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “With more clinics participating in the Ontario Fertility Program, more people and families across the province will be able to access government-funded fertility services faster, more conveniently and with more financial support.”
The new refundable Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit builds on Ontario’s existing Medical Expense Tax Credit, offering further financial relief to couples and individuals in their journeys to start or grow their family. The credit will provide up to $5,000 in annual support by covering 25 per cent of eligible fertility-related expenses, including IVF cycles, fertility medications, travel for treatment and diagnostic testing.
“Our government knows that protecting Ontario and building a more resilient and self-reliant province begins with strong families,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance. “This historic investment will build on our work to provide more people and families with better access to the services they need to start and grow their families – expanding clinic capacity, shortening waitlists and making these services more accessible and affordable for all Ontarians.”
Existing OFP clinics seeking additional IVF funding as well as new clinics seeking to participate in the OFP for the first time are eligible to apply, with the government releasing the successful applicants in late 2025.
Through Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is making steady progress to ensure the OFP is better equipped to meet the needs of patients and provide them with timely and high-quality fertility care where and when they need it, closer to home.
Quick Facts:
- A family that incurs $20,000 in privately funded IVF treatment would be eligible to receive $5,000 in support from the Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit.
- Services relating to the Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit must be provided entirely within Canada. This credit can be claimed in addition to the existing federal and Ontario medical expense tax credits and is expected to deliver $160 million in tax support over the first three years.
- This is an open province-wide call for applications to OFP – all eligible applicants are welcome to apply.
- The call for applications is open for 6 weeks starting June 11, 2025, and will close at 17:00 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on July 24, 2025.
- Questions about the call for applications process, the application guidelines and/or the application forms must be emailed to fertilityprogram@ontario.ca.
- The OFP currently supports 50 Ontario clinics that provide publicly funded fertility services, including intra-uterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF) and fertility preservation.
- Since the launch of the OFP, funding has been provided to over 119,500 Ontarians to help them build their families.
