Research Makes Health Unit Better

Huron County – While many people may not think of the Huron County Health Unit as a leader in research, the Health Unit has a different story.

The Health Unit presented findings on four research projects in Huron County last week at a conference. The workshop was organized in partnership with the Perth District Health Unit.

From access to nutritional food to rural youth issues, presenters shared their findings with over 50 people.

Health Unit Executive Director, Penny Nelligan, says doing research in Huron County is vital to providing good public health services. “Carrying out research means we’re able to provide services that meet community needs. It makes sure we’re reaching the right people with the right programs.”

The Health Unit presented findings on four studies. One study focused on the link between obesity in Huron County and people’s access to nutritional food. Obesity rates in Huron County are the highest in the province. It is also one of the most rural, with only 17.5 residents per square kilometer. The study found that access to nutritional food through grocery stores varies across the county.

Another project shared was the development of a youth-run website. It was designed to address rural youth health issues such as substance abuse, lack of transportation and things to do, and limited health services for rural youth. The SPARK website is run by Huron County youth with professional support.

Dr. Beth Henning, Medical Officer of Health, says she’s proud of the work of the Health Unit. “The research we do is of international quality in its creativity and scientific base. It’s rejuvenating to be part of such exciting and interesting research.”

One of the conference organizers and Epidemiologist for the Huron County Health Unit, Rachel Savage, was pleased with the day. “It’s an opportunity to listen and hear what research is going on locally. It’s all about improving what we do and how we do it as a health unit. It’s also great to see the partnerships formed with other partners such as universities. This has been very important to the research.”
