Mother Support: Reclaiming our Breastfeeding Culture

Canada’s Breastfeeding Week 2008

As we celebrate Canada’s Breastfeeding Week, October 1-7, INFACT Canada (Infant Feeding Action Coalition) and the Grey Bruce Community Breastfeeding Network encourage our communities to support breastfeeding mothers.

Locally, the Community Breastfeeding Network invites you to celebrate Canada’s Breastfeeding Week at M’Wikwedong Native Cultural Resource Centre, 1723 8th Avenue East, Owen Sound, on Friday, October 3, 2008, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome for light refreshments, a bake sale and the opportunity to share breastfeeding stories.

The theme of Breastfeeding Week 2008, Mother Support: Reclaiming our Breastfeeding Culture, promotes the idea that a mother needs circles of support in order to breastfeed successfully. Breastfeeding is not just the mother’s responsibility. Friends and family, the health system, government and society, all play important roles in ensuring a culture supportive of breastfeeding.

We can all work together to support a healthy breastfeeding culture.
  • Tell a breastfeeding mother that she is doing a great job.
  • Thank a partner for helping out with household tasks such as laundry and meals.
  • Inform women coming into your home or business that you are breastfeeding-friendly and they are welcome to breastfeed there.
  • Offer a drive for a woman to attend a support group or to meet with a lactation consultant.
  • Share your own breastfeeding stories!

Let’s work together to Reclaim Our Breastfeeding Culture!
