wouldurather… Quit Smoking Contest for Young Adults Offers $2,500 Prize

Young adults in Perth County are gearing up to better their health for a chance to win $2,500 in the wouldurather…contest, which runs from January 26, 2015, for six weeks. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 can pledge to quit smoking, reduce their smoking, or stay smoke-free for a chance to win. The contest is hosted by the Perth District Health Unit and Leave the Pack Behind.

The most recent Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey by Health Canada reports that 18% of young adult Ontarians are current smokers. “Finding ways to help young adult smokers quit is important, as is encouraging people who don’t smoke to stay smoke-free,” says Dominique Bruce, Public Health Promoter.

The wouldurather… contest offers young adult smokers three different ways to change their smoking behaviour: they can quit smoking altogether; reduce their smoking by half; or refrain from smoking while drinking alcohol. Non-smokers can also enter and pledge to remain smoke-free.

The deadline for registration in the wouldurather… contest is January 25, 2015, and the contest runs for six weeks starting January 26. Two $2,500 grand prizes will be awarded to two people who quit smoking altogether. Other cash prizes will be given to contestants who reduce or stay smoke-free. Contestants will also receive motivational e-mails and support from a buddy. To participate, go to: www.wouldurather.ca.
