South East Grey Community Health Centre
SEGCHC showcases links between community vitality, belonging and good health
Community Health & Wellbeing Week 2015
Throughout October & November, the South East Grey Community Health Centre will be visiting local service clubs, apartment buildings and other community groups to discuss the links between community vitality, a sense of belonging and people’s health. This series of presentations are one of at least 100 different activities being held across the province to celebrate Community Health and Wellbeing Week, (October 19th -25th).
“Feeling like you belong really matters. That’s why our Centre combines the delivery of best practice primary care services, with initiatives that strengthen community vitality and make everyone feel like they belong,” says Penny Pedlar, Nurse Practitioner & Clinical Supervisor at South East Grey Community Health Centre. “Research tells us that when people are part of caring communities, and that community makes them feel valued and accepted, they’re more likely to be healthy. We see this every day at our centre.”
The South East Grey Community Health Centre delivers a range of programs to enhance community vitality and belonging. Our community gardens, walking programs, belly dancing class, summer days of play program and youth coalition strive to make everyone in the community feel welcome and part of the community.
During the coming weeks, program staff will be presenting information on new & expanded programs and services the Community Health Centre is offering. The Healthy Kids Community Challenge will be launching in the coming weeks, a province wide initiative to support the health of children and youth. There are expanded Open Gym Times, now available four days a week, at no cost, at various times in the day at the Centre’s Markdale site. And, there are numerous opportunities for individuals to have a voice in matters affecting their health, such as advocacy for oral health services, prescription drug coverage or participating in the youth coalition or community advisory committee.
The South East Grey Community Health Centre is one of 109 primary health care organizations across the province that deliver medical services in combination with health promotion and community development programs designed to build strong, resilient, communities. The Centre is governed by community members which orients services and programs to community needs. Community Health and Wellbeing Week is coordinated by the Association of Ontario Health Centres.
