Outdoor Ice Rinks Are Coming But We Need Your Help!
Although it’s been a slow start to winter, 2016 is sure to bring some winter fun. As part of the Elgin-St. Thomas Healthy Kids Community Challenge, volunteer-run outdoor ice rink kits are being introduced in each municipality throughout Elgin. Community volunteers interested in running and maintaining the rinks are encouraged to contact the Health Unit for more information.
“Sometimes it’s hard to stay active during the winter months. Ice skating is a great way to get some physical activity in, and the new outdoor rinks will provide families with a fun and free way to get outside and enjoy a skate.” Laura Crandall, Health Promoter.
The outdoor rink kits will be managed on a volunteer basis and will be available through each municipal office in Elgin. Kits will be implemented within the community based on the following criteria:
- Rink must be accessible to the public.
- Volunteer based - at least 2 volunteers agree to attend a rink maintenance training session and complete regular maintenance as scheduled.
- Identified land with public or institutional insurance coverage.
- Access to water and lighting source.
- Kits are returned to the municipality at the end of the season.
- Geographically situated throughout Elgin County.
If you are interested in helping to start up an outdoor ice rink in your community or would like more information, please contact Elgin St. Thomas Public Health at 519-631-9900 ext. 1324.
About The Healthy Kids Community Challenge:
Our community is one of 45 across Ontario taking part in The Healthy Kids Community Challenge. The Healthy Kids Community Challenge unites communities with a common goal: promoting children’s health through physical activity and healthy eating.
“I am excited to launch this program in 45 communities across Ontario. The idea is to get kids to learn healthy habits from an early age. Good habits learned in childhood will serve them well throughout their lives,” states Dipika Damerla, Associate Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.
