United Way planning Community Celebration for March 31

With their annual fundraising campaign wrapping up on March 31, United Way volunteers and staff are planning a celebration to say thank you and report back to the community.

“The Spirit of Community Celebration is our signature event,” explained Ryan Erb, Executive Director of United Way Perth-Huron.  “Although we will be announcing our campaign total that evening, our focus is really not on the funding but on the lives that are improved because someone made a donation to United Way.  It’s the impact that we are celebrating, and the people and companies who made that impact possible.”

“There are a little more than two weeks left in this campaign,” adds Andrew Williams, campaign chair.  “It’s the first year of a three-year campaign.  With one year under our belt, we are ready to announce our progress.  It’s an important milestone for us.  we are excited to be closing on 94% of our goal and are asking the community to help us reach our one-year goal by making a donation today.”

Since the local charity first announced that it was forecasting a shortfall of $50,000, many individuals and organizations have come forward with donations as well as words of encouragement.  Community leaders have also spoken up to express their support.

“The United Way is involved in many charitable and social activities in the Town of St. Marys,” Mayor Al Strathdee wrote in an email.  “They support agencies that assist the most vulnerable in our society during their time of need.  Please support the United Way and help them improve the lives of many in our community.”

Jim Ginn, Mayor of Central Huron, spoke about the people helped by United Way.  “They do amazing things in our community in support of our most vulnerable and underprivileged citizens. I see first hand the numerous agencies they support and the research they conduct to try to rectify problems in our area.”  He noted that the funds raised stay in our community, “So if we help them, we help ourselves!”

Stratford’s Mayor expressed similar sentiments.  Dan Mathieson wrote, “The United Way is an integral part of our community.  They fund programs and organizations that touch the lives of our family, friends and neighbors.  Through the final stages of the campaign, consider the impact they make in our community and give generously, knowing that the people that rely on the services funded by the United Way appreciate your generosity."

North Perth Mayor Julie Behrns spoke about the agency’s work as a community member.  “The United Way truly is about collaboration.  Several North Perth service agencies, community members and leaders have been involved in planning a new Youth Mental Health and addictions program, and raising the funds to make it possible.  I urge the North Perth community to show their support and help United Way meet their campaign goal.”

South Huron Mayor Maureen Cole endorsed the organization with a focus on the programs it helps fund.  “United way is recognized as a fiscally responsible organization that many individuals and non profit organizations can turn to for support.  When we donate to United Way we support programs that help our residents live healthy, productive lives, and in doing so make our community strong, healthy and vibrant. So it is investing in our future.”  She added an appeal as well: “Please give just a little more!”

With a few weeks left in their fundraising campaign, United Way has been reminding Perth and Huron residents to do just that.  Organizers are hoping to raise $1.275 million by the end of the month.
