Docs Rock! Patients and staff at HPHA say 'thanks' to doctors on Doctors' Day

Did you know that every day, more than 320,000 patients across the province are treated and cared for by a doctor? Whether it's in a hospital, a long-term care home, a clinic or at home, Ontario's doctors are making a positive difference in the lives of patients by providing high-quality care when it's needed most.

May 1st is Doctors' Day, a special day launched by the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) to honour the dedicated physicians who work tirelessly for the patients who entrust them with their health care.

"It is an honour and a pleasure for the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) to recognize Doctors' Day," says Andrew Williams, President and CEO. "We are remarkably fortunate to have the dedicated and committed physicians that we do practicing in this region. As the strength and diversity of our local healthcare system stems in large part from this, I extend my thanks and appreciation on behalf of our entire team."

In addition to providing compassionate care, physicians at HPHA are helping to shape the future of health care locally, regionally and provincially by participating in research, developing educational programs, and advancing innovative models of patient care. They are also instrumental in leading the integration of health care across our system to ensure that patients receive the right care at the right time in the right place.

A number of HPHA physicians also contribute to the education the next generation of physicians through the teaching of medical students and residents. Through a partnership with the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry over 65 Faculty Appointed Physicians accept these students and residents for regular teaching rotations. Internist, Dr. Tom Haffner is one of these physicians and he was recently honoured with the 2016 Award of Excellence for Faculty in Distributed Sites. The HPHA is privileged to have so many physicians interested in having students and residents with with them. Introducing these learns to the many and varied practice opportunities in our rural communities early in their training is a tremendous way to strengthen long-term recruitment of these health care professionals.

"On behalf of the Alliance and our communities, I'd like to congratulate Dr. Haffner," says Mary Atkinson, HPHA Board Chair. "Dr. Haffner's nomination articulated his strong commitment to providing evidence-based education to medical students and residents while simultaneously providing timely care to his patients. He was applauded for tailoring his teaching specifically to each learner's needs at the beginning of rotations, and for being clear about his expectations for each resident's improvement. His ability to provide strong feedback which in turn improves the clinical skills of learners was also praised. Those who know Dr. Haffner can attest to his humbleness and supportive and encouraging demeanor with other hospital staff and allied health professionals, demonstrating true team-based partient-centred care in his everyday  practice."

During the month of May, patients and their families are invited to celebrate Doctors' Day by adding their name through OntariosDoctors.com or by tweeting #PatientsFirst #DocsRock.
