Mayor Matt Brown takes BRT business case to Big City Mayors' Caucus

Mayor Matt Brown is bringing London's priorities to the national stage at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Big City Mayors' Caucus in Winnipeg.

Topics of discussion will include rapid transit funding, affordable housing, poverty reduction and diversity in politics.

The Big City Mayors' Caucus is comprised of mayors from 22 of the biggest cities in Canada. They are meeting in advance of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Annual Conference.

Those in Winnipeg for the FCM conference include Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"This will be a great opportunity to present the Council-approved Bus Rapid Transit business case to our Federal partners," said Mayor Brown. "This will be the largest infrastructure project in the City's history and it will create a more modern, prosperous and environmentally sustainable community."

There is $60-billion earmarked for new infrastructure projects in the 2016 Federal Budget.

Yesterday, Tuesday, May 31, City Council approved a $500-million Full Bus Rapid Transit system for London. The City has committed $129-million to the project and is seeking funding from both Federal and Provincial partners.

London's business case for the Bus Rapid Transit will be sent to all local MPs and MPPs this week.

The proposed 24 km system will reduce transit travel times, relieve overloaded local transit routes, improve air quality and produce both short and long term economic development.

Construction is set to begin in 2018 with the full system operational by 2027.
