Saint Elizabeth Health Care
Canadian nurses leading the way with academic-practice partnership
May 7, 2007 – Home and community care
leader, Saint Elizabeth Health Care (SEHC), is
partnering with Queen’s University Joanna Briggs
Collaboration (QJBC) to establish the first
Evidence Translation Group in North America as
part of a prestigious international health research
network.
As an Evidence Translation Group, SEHC will
conduct systematic reviews of nursing research
from a community perspective in areas such as
chronic disease management, palliative care, IV
therapy and healthy work environments. With
ongoing mentorship and support from QJBC,
nurses will then synthesize their findings into a
succinct statement that describes the current state
of knowledge in a particular area of
practice.
“This partnership is about harnessing the immense
body of knowledge that has accumulated over
time and focusing it for use at the point of care,
namely community nursing,” explains Margaret
Harrison, a nurse scientist and the founding
director of Queen’s Joanna Briggs
Collaboration. “As researchers and clinicians,
we have a shared interest in making health
research evidence available to clinical practice.
How we go about this is an emerging
science.”
Nancy Lefebre, senior vice president of knowledge
and practice at SEHC, agrees. “The meaningful
use of research evidence in home and community
care has the potential to improve health outcomes
for clients and promote a better practice
environment for nurses,” she says. “We are
delighted to be partnering with QJBC in support of
these goals and the realization of our vision to be
a phenomenal knowledge and care exchange
company.” Lefebre adds that the knowledge
gained through systematic reviews will be used to
help shape health care practice and policy in
Canada and the world.
Established in 1996 by the Royal Adelaide
Hospital and the University of Adelaide in
Australia, the Joanna Briggs Institute is a
prestigious international health research
organization that brings together a range of
practice-oriented research activities to improve the
effectiveness of nursing practice and health care
outcomes.
The Queen’s Joanna Briggs Collaboration is
based at and supported by Queen’s University,
Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The Queen’s Joanna
Briggs Collaboration is a unique Canadian
initiative that provides leadership and support in
evidence-based practice through knowledge
translation, knowledge transfer and knowledge
utilization.
