Winnifred Henderson Open House: Celebrate the Changes at Your Library

Over the past 18 months, the Stratford Public Library has been redesigning its physical spaces to improve your experience of the Library. The Adult Floor layout includes more seating and light, while the Children’s Floor is now splashed with vibrant colours, playful furnishings and interactive materials.

The Library was able to make these exciting changes thanks to the generosity of a former staff member. Winnifred Henderson worked as a Circulation Clerk and Children’s Librarian from 1930 to 1974, running the beloved Saturday Storytime for many years. Ms. Henderson died in October 2013 at the age of 103 and donated $235,000 to the Library. In 2014 and 2015, the Library has used $65,000 to purchase new furnishings, with the Library Board moving the balance of the funds to the Stratford Public Library Foundation for investment and use at a later date.

The Stratford Public Library invites you to celebrate Ms. Henderson’s contributions to her Library and to her community at the Winnifred Henderson Open House on Tuesday, June 9th. The Open House celebrations will feature story times throughout the day, with a ceremony to take place at 6:30pm on the Children’s Floor of the Library.

If you have a memory of Ms. Henderson that you’d like to share, please contact SPL’s CEO, Julia Merritt, jmerritt@stratfordcanada.ca, 519-271-0220 ext 110.
